12 Best Romantic Day Trips in Minnesota: Scenic, Cozy & Adventure-Filled Getaways for Couples

Why Minnesota Shines for Romantic Escapes

Minnesota might not scream “romance” to everyone at first, but trust me, it’s got a special kind of magic that sneaks up on you. Especially in the fall and especially if you live there. I can tell you firsthand there’s a lot of beautiful places in the state and they’re perfect for dates and day trips for couples. In fact, my husband proposed to me on the shores of Lake Superior at Gooseberry Falls and we got married in the forest near Lake Pepin, so I know just how enchanting Minnesota can be. Those cherished places sold me on this state’s knack for turning simple outings into unforgettable memories.

Whether you’re craving a laid-back small-town vibe, a winding scenic road trip drive through forests, or a day packed with outdoor fun, Minnesota delivers. This guide is your ticket to some of the best romantic day trips in Minnesota across the state from the bustling Twin Cities to the wild North Shore where the two of you can carve out a little slice of perfection together.

12 Best Romantic Day Trips in Minnesota: Scenic, Cozy & Adventure-Filled Getaways for Couples

Romantic Day Trips Near the Twin Cities

Stillwater – A Cozy Riverside Haven

Stillwater is a small town on the side of the St. Croix River and it feels like it was built for couples who love a good mix of relaxation and charming cozy nooks. Main Street will be your starting point. Wander past boutique shops and poke around antique stores for treasures or amusement. From there, duck into a cafe for a quick coffee fix or if it’s summertime, get a child’s size portion of ice cream at Nelsons (yes a child size).

In the late afternoon/evening take a St. Croix River cruise at sunset. The water reflects the sky in a way that makes everything feel a little more special. For dinner, I’d point you to Feller for a meal that’s hearty yet refined. If you’re spending the day in Stillwater in the winter, try ice skating at Lowell Park or snuggling up in a horse-drawn carriage. Stillwater is the kind of place where you can just soak in the moment without trying too hard.

Excelsior – A Day on the Lake at Lake Minnetonka

Excelsior has this easygoing elegance that makes it a winner for a day out. The Lake Minnetonka shoreline is popular for a leisurely walk with your special someone and nothing beats the sound of waves lapping while you’re side by side. While you’re there, take a step back in time by about the historic 1906 Minnehaha steamboat which will hopefully be available to ride again one day. For food I suggest 318 Cafe. They do a brunch that’s cozy and delicious, whereas Coalition steps it up for a dinner date with serious flavor. Wrap the day up with a drink at Maynards’ lakeside patio for a view of the sunset. It’s the ideal spot to toast to a great day.

Taylors Falls & St. Croix Falls – Nature Meets Romance

If the two of you love a bit of adventure and consider yourselves to be an outdoorsy couple then Taylors Falls is calling. Interstate State Park’s glacial potholes make for a cool hike where the ancient rock formations give you something to marvel at together. A paddle wheel boat cruise on the St. Croix River adds a special excursion to your day with scenery that shifts from lush to serene as you float along. Grab a bite at The Watershed Cafe, a farm-to-table menu that feels thoughtful and warm. In the winter, it turns into a snow wonderland so take advantage of this through snowshoeing along the river bluffs.

Red Wing – History, Views, and a Splash of Wine

Red Wing blends old-school historic appeal with some seriously impressive scenery. Hiking Barn Bluff is a must. The Mississippi River stretches out down below and after the hike to the top the view feels like a reward you’ve earned together. Pop into the Red Wing Shoe Store & Museum for a quirky stop (yes they’ve got the world’s biggest boot). If you guys like wine then try Falconer Vineyards. You’ll want to linger and sip wine on their patio while taking in the nearby rolling hills. End the day with dinner at The Port in the St. James Hotel for a cozy upscale feel. Red Wing has layers and every one’s worth peeling back.

Afton – A Quiet Retreat by the River

Afton’s the spot for couples who just want to unwind or are looking for low-key luxury. Afton State Park offers hikes with river valley views that make you feel miles away from everything else. The Afton House Inn is your go-to for brunch or a dinner paired with a solid wine list. Afton is lovely all year around but winter is when it really shines. Book a private cabin or hit Afton Alps for skiing then warm up with a spa day. It’s simple, quiet, and exactly what you need when life’s moving too fast.

Romantic Day Trips in Southern Minnesota

Lanesboro – A Slow-Paced Sweetheart of a Town

Lanesboro is a town with this knack for making time slow down. Rent bikes and cruise the Root River State Trail. The path’s flat, scenic, and lets you chat as you pedal. Inspiration Point delivers a valley overview that is worth the short trek. Four Daughters Vineyard & Winery is a treat if you want to kick back in the open countryside air. You can even see a show at the Commonweal Theatre if you enjoy theater. Lanesboro is a place that is all about taking it easy and savoring the little things with your favorite person.

Winona – Artsy Vibes and Riverfront

Winona’s a river town with a lot to love. Garvin Heights Overlook gives you a sweeping view that’s hard to top so bring a coffee and just take it in! Lake Winona is a great location to go on a walk or tandem bike around if you’re feeling sporty. The Minnesota Marine Art Museum is not well known but it should be. Its exhibits are thoughtful and will give the two of you plenty to talk about. Dinner at Signatures Restaurant feels like a proper date night with its polished yet comfy atmosphere. All in all, Winona is laid-back but packed with enough to keep you both smiling.

New Ulm – Bavaria in Minnesota

New Ulm leans hard into its German roots and old-world flair, and it’s a blast for a day trip. Climb the Hermann the German Monument for a view that stretches over the town’s rooftops and beyond. Schell’s Brewery is the second oldest brewery in the United States and offers tours and tastings that are equal parts history and hops. Veigel’s Kaiserhoff serves up German classics like schnitzel in a setting that’s warm and welcoming. New Ulm is a little quirky, a little cozy, and a whole lot of fun for a date that’s different from the usual.

Romantic Day Trips in Northern Minnesota

Duluth – A North Shore Classic

Duluth is a no-brainer for a romantic getaway. Together you can watch ships glide under the Aerial Lift Bridge from Canal Park which feels oddly mesmerizing. There’s also Park Point Beach but Lester Park is my and my husband’s favorite in all of Duluth. We love walking the paths through the trees and over the water especially in the rain. You can also tour Glensheen Mansion for a dose of elegance then cap it with a North Shore scenic train ride. No matter what you find yourself doing in Duluth, it is a popular day trip for Minnesotans for a reason.

North Shore Scenic Drive – A Road Trip Made for Two

If you’ve got the time to head even farther north than Duluth will bring you to what I strongly believe is Minnesota’s most beautiful area. The North Shore Scenic Drive along Highway 61 is a dream, especially in the fall. Stop at Gooseberry Falls for a day hiking and appreciating Lake Superior. Father up the road will take you to Split Rock Lighthouse; a photogenic, old lighthouse perched high up on a cliff. Grab a bite at Lemon Wolf Cafe in Beaver Bay for a simple cozy meal that hits the spot after a day of exploring. With this road trip, its less about the destination and more about the winding road and sharing glimpses of the lake peeking through trees with your significant other.

Grand Marais – Artsy and Lakeside Cool

Grand Marais has this artsy, small-town soul that’s tough to resist. Artist’s Point is your sunset spot where you can walk out on the breakwater and let Lake Superior’s waves set the scene. While in Grand Marais, be sure to find some fresh homemade pie and coffee that’ll warm you from the inside out. Sivertson Gallery is worth a browse for local art and handmade goodies make it a fun stop for a keepsake. Grand Marais might be a bit of a drive if you’re visiting from the Twin Cities but it has a vibe that’s equal parts chill and inspiring, perfect for a day that flows at your own pace.

Heading even farther up north?

Take a one-of-a-kind road trip around northern Lake Superior through Canada that no one talks about!

Ely – Wilderness and Quiet Connection

Ely is the starting place for couples who crave nature. Paddle a canoe or kayak through the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and experience the awe-inspiring beauty. It’s peaceful and the only thing you’ll hear is the call of animals and silence broken only by the dip of your paddle. The International Wolf Center is a cool detour. Learn about wolves and feel a little closer to the wild. Book a lakefront cabin for the night if you can. It’s private, peaceful, and the kind of spot where you can just be together. Ely is raw and real and I promise you’ll love it!

Packing Tips for a Cozy & Romantic Day Trip

Day trips in Minnesota can range drastically, so it’s best to be prepared! Layers are a non-negotiable because summer evenings can still get nippy up north and jackets or long sleeves can help keep mosquitoes at bay, so toss a spare jacket in the car. Waterproof hiking boots come in handy if you’re hiking near waterfalls or tromping through damp trails. A cozy blanket’s a smart move for impromptu picnics or curling up at any of the scenic overlooks on the North Shore. And for the road? Reusable travel mugs keep your coffee hot and your vibe on point.
