There’s something magical about mountain views—they have a way of inspiring awe and deep appreciation. Mountain views all over the world offer a connection to nature’s raw beauty like nothing else.
Growing up in Colorado, I was lucky enough to have the Rocky Mountains as my backyard. Those towering peaks taught me to love and appreciate the beauty and serenity of the mountains. Whether it was hiking with my family, camping under starry skies, or simply marveling at the grandeur of it all as we drove across the plains and passes throughout the state, the mountains became a cornerstone of who I am.
While I don’t currently live in a region with mountains anymore, I find myself constantly dreaming of them—whether it’s planning my next adventure or reminiscing about past travels. Mountains have a way of grounding us, of making us feel small yet connected to something so much bigger. They never cease to take my breath away whether it’s my first time seeing a range, or my hundredth time. Today, I want to take you on a journey to some of the most breathtaking mountain views from around the world. These are places that have inspired me, awed me, and reminded me why I’m always drawn back to the mountains. Let’s dive in!
Mountain Views in Norway
1. Molde’s Mountain Range
Why Visit: Known as the “City of Roses,” Molde is surrounded by 222 peaks visible from its iconic Molde Panorama. It’s a mountain view that feels almost unreal, where the mountains seem to rise directly from the sea. It’s the perfect combination of water and mountains.
What Makes It Special: Molde’s unique setting where dramatic peaks meet the water, creates a stunning contrast that’s unlike anything else. Whether you’re exploring nearby trails or simply enjoying the mountain view from the city, it’s a place that leaves a lasting impression.
I stayed in Molde during my first ever solo trip and I found it to be a great town to stay in relation to all of the places I wanted to visit while in Norway.
2. Geirangerfjord
Why Visit: When it comes to Norway, there’s a few places people immediately think of and this is one of them. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Norway’s most famous fjords, surrounded by sheer cliffs and cascading waterfalls.
What Makes It Special: Geirangerfjord is the perfect blend of towering peaks and water. The fjord’s dramatic beauty is best experienced from multiple angles—whether by boat, by car, from one of its many scenic lookouts, or along a hiking trail.
Pro Tip: Don’t miss Flydalsjuvet, one of the best vantage points to take in the mountain view, fjords, and town down below!
Unbeatable Mountain Views in Colorado
3. Abrams Mountain, Colorado
Why Visit: How can I talk about mountains but then leave out my home state?! The drive from Colorado towns Silverton to Ouray along the Million Dollar Highway (U.S. Route 550) is considered one of the most scenic and thrilling drives in the U.S. The highway winds through the San Juan Mountains, offering dramatic drop-offs, tight switchbacks, and unparalleled views. The best place to see this mountain in my opinion is from Bear Creek Falls, located right outside Ouray. Here you can get out of the car and enjoy the majestic peak while also enjoying the large nearby waterfalls.
What Makes It Special: Abrams Mountain, with its distinct silhouette, rises dramatically above the rugged San Juan Mountains. The route itself is an adventure, with each turn revealing a new breathtaking perspective of the surrounding peaks. While I don’t know if I’d drive the entire route in winter, the view is worth seeing in all four seasons.
Driving this road is both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. When I took my friends on this route, half of them loved it, and the other half? Well they refused to look out the window until we were safely in Ouray. Look down at your own risk I suppose! I love pulling over at the scenic overlook and being completely mesmerized by Abrams Mountain and the surrounding nearby cliffs. It is an absolute must for your Colorado Bucket List!
4. Maroon Bells, Colorado
Why Visit: Located near Aspen, the Maroon Bells are often called the most photographed mountains in North America. These twin peaks are framed by a pristine alpine lake and golden aspen trees in the fall, creating a scene of pure magic.
What Makes It Special: Positioned in front of Maroon Bells is Crater Lake, a lake so clear you can easily see the bottom. The reflection of the Maroon Bells in Maroon Lake is breathtaking, especially during sunrise. The trails around the area offer incredible views and access to serene wilderness. Heads up: in order to protect Crater Lake you are now allowed to swim or boat on the water. The peaks Maroon Peak and Pyramid Peak make up the formation of Maroon Bells and they’re both two of Colorado’s 54 14ers (14,000 ft tall mountains).
I hiked around the Maroon Bells for my 19th birthday with some friends and got caught in a thunderstorm during the afternoon. We had to run back to find shelter and by the time we found coverage it of course stopped raining. But by that time though it was too late; we were so soaked that we had to go into town and buy new clothes. It’s a hilarious situation I’ll never forget.
Switzerland’s Iconic Peaks and Villages
5. The Matterhorn
Why Visit: Switzerland’s most iconic peak, the Matterhorn, is a bucket-list destination for travelers and adventurers alike.
What Makes It Special: Its pyramid shape and towering presence over Zermatt make it a sight to behold. Whether you’re skiing, hiking, or simply admiring it from town, the Matterhorn commands attention. It’s stunning all year round in all seasons.
Pro Tip: Take the Gornergrat Railway for spectacular views or hike nearby trails to experience the Matterhorn from different angles.
6. Gimmelwald
Why Visit: A tranquil, car-free village nestled up a cliff in the Swiss Alps.
What Makes It Special: Sweeping views of snow-capped peaks and lush meadows make it a hiker’s paradise. Gimmelwald feels untouched by modern time, offering a sense of peace and simplicity that’s hard to find elsewhere.
The charm of this village is unmatched. There is a short cable car ride you can take to the top, but my husband and I chose to take the 1.5 hour hike instead. It was steep but so worth it! I remember sitting on a wooden bench overlooking the valley watching the paragliders. They look so miniscule with the giant ancient mountains framing the background.
7. Grindelwald
Why Visit: Known as the “Glacier Village,” Grindelwald offers unparalleled access to alpine trails and jaw-dropping views.
What Makes It Special: The dramatic backdrop of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks makes Grindelwald a dream destination for adventurers and photographers alike.
Pro Tip: Don’t miss the First Cliff Walk for a thrilling perspective or take the Jungfrau Railway to experience the “Top of Europe.”
Germany’s Picturesque Peaks and Forests
8. Berchtesgaden
Why Visit: Located in the Bavarian Alps, southeast of Munich, Berchtesgaden is home to Germany’s highest peaks and pristine alpine lakes.
What Makes It Special: The breathtaking views of Watzmann Mountain and Königssee Lake make this a must-visit destination. The area is perfect for hiking, boating, swimming, or simply soaking in the alpine scenery.
Hiking through Berchtesgaden was one of our favorite memories of our honeymoon. I felt like I had stepped into a fairy tale. The stillness of Königssee and the towering peaks surrounding it were absolutely magical. I also absolutely love the unique color of the water. It’s so beautiful!
9. Black Forest
Why Visit: Famous for its dense woods and rolling hills, the Black Forest is a haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts.
What Makes It Special: The panoramic views of lush greenery stretching for miles are a testament to Germany’s natural beauty. The area is also steeped in folklore, adding a touch of mystery to its charm.
Pro Tip: Explore hiking trails like Hornisgrinde or visit charming villages like Triberg for a blend of nature and culture.
My husband and I chose to road trip through Germany and this gave up plenty of opportunities to explore and see the forest. We also recommend going on a zipline canopy tour if you’re up for the thrill!
