12 Day Trips in Arizona for Couples
A Romantic Road Trip Guide for Northern Arizona

Growing up as a kid, road trips from Colorado to Phoenix, Arizona were an annual tradition in my family. With every drive through the desert, I fell more and more in love with Arizona’s rugged beauty, rich history, and endless adventures.
Arizona isn’t just about the Grand Canyon, although that is a must-see place. It’s a playground for adventurous and romantic people at heart who are looking for breathtaking scenery, stunning landscapes, and unforgettable experiences.
Whether you’re craving scenic road trips, cozy mountain towns, or stargazing under some of the clearest skies in the country, this list of 12 day trips in Arizona for couples has something for everyone looking for the perfect day trip.
Day Trips in Arizona for Couples
1. Sedona via State Route 89A (1-hour drive from Flagstaff)
Did anyone say road trip? Visiting Sedona as a day trip is a classic for a reason: it’s a beautiful drive leading into a gorgeous town. Sedona’s red rock formations are beautiful and they glow like fire during golden hour. Also, there are plenty of hiking trails that lead to secluded vistas and the town itself is very charming.
Sedona offers many different activities from hiking around Cathedral Rock, to spending the day at the Sedona spa, or enjoying a wine and charcuterie pairing at a local vineyard. Page Springs Cellars is a favorite.
Don’t miss: Watching the sunset at Airport Mesa Overlook.

2. Antelope Canyon (2-hour drive from Flagstaff)
Antelope Canyon is the ultimate instagrammable destination, but you’ll adore it whether or not you’re into photography. The way sunlight dances through the slot canyon’s swirling sandstone walls feels almost unreal. It’s part of why I love Arizona so much—the land and the rock structures are so different than anything else I’ve seen.
In the Antelope Canyon, you can squeeze through narrow passageways and watch beams of light illuminate the canyon. And of course, take once-in-a-lifetime photos to capture the unique canyon walls.
Pro tip: Book a tour well in advance because this is one of the most popular spots in Arizona.

3. Grand Canyon South Rim (1.5-hour drive from Flagstaff)
How could I not mention the Grand Canyon?! Nothing puts life in perspective like standing at the edge of the Grand Canyon, watching the sun set over its endless layers. If you’re in Flagstaff I’d suggest the South Rim because it’s a lot closer than the North Rim, making it a great choice for a day trip!
At the Grand Canyon, you can check out the Hopi Point, walk the Rim Trail or stay at the historic El Tovar Hotel. Just please be careful and stay away from the edge of the canyon.
If you’re more adventurous, I recommend hiking part of the Bright Angel Trail, even if you go for only a mile or two—you’ll love it!

4. Lowell Observatory (5-minute drive from downtown Flagstaff)
This one is for the stargazers. Lowell Observatory is one of the best places in the country to stargaze. It’s a perfect outing for romantic couples because nothing more spectacular than sitting together staring up at the vast starry sky.
While you’re at the observatory, view Saturn’s rings through a telescope. Learn about the discovery of Pluto which was in fact discovered at this very observatory, and end the day snuggled up under a star-filled Arizona sky.

5. Montezuma Castle & Tuzigoot National Monuments (1-hour drive from Flagstaff)
If the two of you love ancient American history, then the Montezuma Castle should be on your list! They are 1,000-year-old Sinagua ruins and they’re a fascinating and peaceful place to explore. You can walk through ancient cliff dwellings and imagine the lives of the people who built them.

6. Page, AZ (Horseshoe Bend & Lake Powell) (2-hour drive from Flagstaff)
Hands down, taking a day trip to Page Arizona and the surrounding area is the ultimate water and desert adventure. It is the perfect place for couples who love photography, kayaking, or anyone who appreciates stunning landscapes. Some suggestions for Page include visiting Horseshoe Bend, renting a private boat on Lake Powell, or just enjoying the afternoon exploring the captivating region.

7. Verde Valley Wine Trail (1.5-hour drive from Flagstaff)
Arizona has a wine country? Yes, it does! You can spend the day in one of their vineyards overlooking the nearby mountains. Enjoy this fantastic wine-tasting escape by sipping local wine while overlooking the rolling hills of Page Springs Cellars or Alcantara Vineyards.
8. Petrified Forest National Park (1.75-hour drive from Flagstaff)
There exists an entire forest made of stone. The Petrified Forest National Park is filled with thousand year old fossilized trees and colorful badlands which makes it a great stop for couples who want a more unique day trip.
On our road trips down to Phoenix, my family has often taken the Painted Desert Rim Drive and we like it! If you choose to get out, you can walk among 200-million-year-old petrified logs.

9. Jerome, AZ (1.5-hour drive from Flagstaff)
Jerome is a quirky town turned into an artsy retreat with historic hotels, great restaurants, and a wild past making it a uniquely western destination.
If you’re feeling brave, stay at the allegedly haunted Jerome Grand Hotel. If that’s not your thing (I know it’s not mine 😅) you can go wine tasting at Caduceus Cellars or explore the funky antique shops in the town.
10. Bearizona (35-minute drive from Flagstaff)
Bear is in the name and bears are what you will get at this cool spot. Bearizona is a drive-thru wildlife park where you can see a variety of bears, wolves, and bison all from the comfort of your own car. You can also get out of the car and visit smaller creatures such as their bobcat, red fox, and even otters.

11. Sunset Crater & Wupatki National Monuments (40-minute drive from Flagstaff)
At the Sunset Crater, you can explore a mix of lava fields, volcanic craters. The Wupatki National Monuments are ancient Native American ruins which offer a surprisingly unique and interesting excursion. I suggest taking a hike through the surreal Lava Flow Trail or visiting the Wupatki Pueblo.

12. Cave Creek & Carefree, AZ (2-hour drive from Flagstaff)
Desert towns with a cowboy-meets-bohemian vibe at Cave Creek and Carefree (a great name for a town btw). These two spots are great for couples who like rustic charm, art, and the feel of small western towns. You can go horseback riding through the desert, shop for handmade jewelry, or have dinner at El Encanto.
Bonus: Day Trips for the Bold & Determined
These are harder to reach or require special permits, but they’re bucket-list worthy for adventurous couples!
Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico (9-hour drive from Flagstaff & Phoenix)
A massive underground cave system unlike anything else in the Southwest. If you’re up for a longer road trip, it’s worth it. You can walk through the Big Room, watch bats emerge at sunset, and the entire place feels like you’re on another planet.

The Wave (Vermilion Cliffs National Monument – Requires a Permit)
One of the most stunning natural wonders in the world, with swirling sandstone waves that look straight out of a dream.
Why it’s hard to visit: Only 64 people per day are allowed, and getting a permit is extremely competitive.

How to get a permit:
- Apply online (4 months in advance) at Recreation.gov.
- Try the daily lottery (1 day before) if you’re near Kanab, UT.
- Increase your chances: Apply for multiple dates and go in winter when fewer people try.
